First Meeting with a Divorce Attorney

You might never have interviewed anyone for anything, but when you are choosing the divorce attorney you must interview a variety of divorce attorneys. It is not a straight forward task. Yellow pages and adverts don’t help.

Things to do Before the Meeting

Accumulate referrals of successful divorce attorneys and than sit in the court and check the skills of the divorce attorneys. Don’t consider the single attorney law firms. They aren’t the best choice as the attorney has no other associates to rely back on. Some divorce attorneys do not charge you for consultation in the first meetings however others may charge for the hour.

Preparation for the Meeting

Prepare a handy tape recorder with 90 minute tape. Make sure you utilize the first consultation hour for your benefit. Go formally dressed and reach the office on time. Be specific in the questions that you require details on and use open ended questions for asking about the divorce attorney.

The Meeting

When meeting, introduce yourself well. Get permission to record the session. Make sure that you understand the answers provided. Ask to elaborate anything if it was not clear. Complete your entire session and do not leave the session early. If you find yourself uncomfortable with the divorce attorney, utilize the time to your benefit and get information that you need.

Questions to Ask Divorce Attorney:

  • How promptly do you return phone calls?
  • How well do you keep your clients informed about the case?
  • How well do you deal with custody issues?
  • How many years of experience does the divorce lawyer have in family law?
  • How many similar cases have you represented and what was the success ratio for these cases?
  • How many settlements have you settled out of court?
  • How many cases are you handling at this time?
  • What will I be charged, for phone calls made on my behalf?
  • What are terms for payment?
