Marriage Counseling – Can you stop your divorce?

Divorce is a resolution to an unhappy marriage. No marriage is ever problem free. Sometimes marriage is unbearable. But, do all problems in married life lead to divorce?

The Reality

Married couples contemplate divorce all the time. With the exception of fairytales, no couple can ever claim living an abnormally, happily married life. The fact is most marriages end up dissolved with divorce decree issued by the court.

The Question

Not all couples divorce, some resolve their issues and continue to enjoy the good and the bad marriage has to offer. The question is can you do the same? Are there any alternatives? It all depends on you, your spouse, the situation you folks are in and some serious marriage counseling. Marriage counseling is the only means to re-establishing communication and communication is the only means to saving a faltering marriage to end up as divorce.

Marriage Counseling

One thing you must keep in mind is that you must be as honest about the facts as they actually are and be a little open in your approach to marriage counseling. Your spouse needs to be accommodating as well. The discussion during the marriage counseling session can’t always be pleasant but needs to be liberal, mature and expressive. You can use a professional marriage counselor or a family member willing to mediate the discussion. The marriage counseling sessions have to be repeated on a regular basis. In many cases this counseling can go on for years.

The Result

Marriage counseling doesn’t always work. The next step would be to separate. Best thing to do is to sit down with your spouse and plan the separation. Contrary to what you might think, separation doesn’t lead to divorce. Separation is a good way of soothing relationships. Some couples separate to get time to think things over and find ways to make the marriage work. If separation doesn’t work things out, than there is only one alternative left, divorce.

Things to remember

Divorce is not the only alternative. There are many options to resolving problems in a marriage. Try them out one by one. Be open and accommodating to solve problems. Compromises are the key to resolving problems. Every relationship is demanding. The only thing that keeps couples together is if it is all worth it.
